Struggling

The boy has completed 1 1/2 weeks of practice for football now. The first week was all conditioning and basics. This week has been in full gear with hitting. Practice #1 was fine. The second practice was fine as well. The third practice he lost his helmet at the field somewhere. Not a good night for the boy as he had to endure some Dagrommian fury at it's worst. The fourth practice his coach brought the helmet which he had found, and the boy had to run more laps than any football player, ever. Punishment for losing his helmet and for not paying enough attention to the drills. The fifth practice was full contact and had some tackling/hitting drills. The boy got lit up. Repeatedly. He made one tackle to which everyone really cheered him. Otherwise he was blown up by the other kids. Everything you could do wrong in trying to tackle someone he did. Poor form, too high, tentative, lack of power. It looked painful. Repeatedly. Yesterday he made two tackles at practice and felt that he did better. He still got blown up a lot. The team gave him an ovation at the end of practice for his effort. The coach told him that if he didn't quit before the first game then he would buy him dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Now he's motivated. Hell, if I'd thought of it I'd have told the kid to attack the others like they were made of mole sauce. He loves himself some Mexican food.

Two more practices to go this week. Here's hoping he figures it out before he gets himself killed.

I'm impressed. The kid has more heart than I ever did. Tackle football scared the crap out of me.

Gyuss - I think it scares the crap out of him too. I guess if you get run over enough you get over it.

I give him an A for bravery. I played one season of pee-wee football and that was enough for me to satisfy a lifetime. I hope he keeps it up if he is getting something out of it. fun, fitness, focus, or just simple old toughening up. I hope he gives it up if it only proves to make him miserable. there are many other sports out there to try... team and individual.

Luckily for you he was around Q enough that he was able to pick some of the things that a real manly man know. Like that very important lesson that to overcome fear you have to endure pain, unfortunately he learned that on the weekend your wife was out of town and he walked in on us in your bedroom. But knowledge is power and it seems that he has learned some valuable lessons early in life.

I know it's the mom in me, but I don't think I'd be able to watch my kid play football.

But mole...Mmmmm.

why do I hear drunk-joe-namath when I read the title of your post?

congrats to the boy for sticking with it. here's hoping that if he does make the decision to quit the game it's because he doesn't enjoy playing the game, not because he has to work at it. that can be a tough call to make.

Cyber D - Fitness-wise this is going to be really good for him, because they are certainly busting their asses. He's starting with about the same knowledge of the game that Lil' Magnum has right now. I wonder if he meant that he wanted to try Fantasy Football.

Q - I am the teacher and you are the student. Kneel my disciple!

Churlita - I don't know that I can watch it either. I think that he's having some reservations about the fact that he told his friends that he was playing and invited them to come watch.

Cyber D - If I could have figured how to write it the way that drunk Joe Namath said it to Suzy Kolber I would have done so.

Heather - Once the money has been spent there is a strict no quitting policy. Unfortunately that meant 3 months of belly dancing lessons that I had to do when my wife wouldn't attend them.

Gotta love those Chimichangas!

I dated a football player once, and I love Mexican food, and yay for the kid for still going!

Tera - That reminds me of the speech that Summer made in Napolean Dynamite. "Who wants chimichangas for lunch everyday anyway?"

Eslocura - He's got guts. I just hope they don't get bruised too much.

I think you need to feed him the Mexican food before practice. He'd have a whole new line of defense..

Awesome. I always wanted to play tackle football but got sidetracked... I feel like I'm getting to do it now through your son, as I probably would have started off in similar fashion. Good luck to him and you.

belly dancing eh? that could come in handy. are you sure your wife didn't plan on you taking the class from the get go? ;-)

Susan - That's brilliant! I don't know that it would make him more popular with the team, but it would be a great defense mechanism.

Kofi - I just hope it gets better. The coach just called to ask if my son was hurt because of the way that he was running at practice. No, that;s just the way that he runs. Damn.

Heather - I'm not bad either. I do a mean dance of the seven veils. Hopah!!!!

That's why I don't go to football practice.

As long as there's football, we phrenologists will always be in business. One can build a whole practice from head injuries and father-son dynamics.

And Susan beat me to the punch re: the refried beans defense.

Nina - That's why I'll be avoiding it as much as possible. He's got me in his business enough as is. He needs to have something that's his own.

Plug - Thanks. That relieves me of my concerns.

I knew he said he was bored this summer; I just didn't realize how desperate he was.
